Education for sustainability: Transforming school curricula
Introduction: The present study investigates how the integration of sustainability in educational programs can contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on the formation of conscious and active citizens in the fight against environmental and social challenges. Method: A comparative analysis of educational programs in 10 different countries was conducted, focusing on how sustainability concepts were incorporated. Surveys and focus groups were conducted with students and teachers to assess the impact on their perception and behavior. Results: The results indicated a significant increase in the environmental and social awareness of students in schools with well-integrated sustainability programs. In addition, a positive change in their behavior towards more sustainable practices was observed. Discussion: The findings highlight the importance of education in shaping future responsible citizens. Barriers and challenges to integrating sustainability into education systems and the need for teacher training in this area are discussed. Conclusions: The effective incorporation of sustainability in education is fundamental to achieving the SDGs. A constant review and updating of school curricula is recommended to effectively include these concepts.
